We kick off the movie with a young man named Josh walking around a creepy library while looking for someone. There's an older gentleman in there with him who is there to be creepy and give him annoyed looks. While walking around, we get plenty of spooky antics: noises, lights going off and finally a ghostie who pops up, grabs hold and then sucks the life force out of him.

Scary Movie 6

I remember seeing the original in theaters when it came out back in 2000. I also remember loving it and cracking up in the theater. I watched the second one and enjoyed it, but I don't remember much from it outside of the And 1 commercial parody and "Take my strong hand!" I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but the third one is the best in the franchise. It's a different kind of humor, but I found it funnier and a bit cleverer than the other two. Four was absolute garb

Hokum

Adam Scott plays Ohm Bauman, a writer who is trying to finish his latest book and is also a huge asshole. He is staying at a hotel in Ireland to work on the book and take care of something personal. When he gets there, he quickly picks a fight with a man with a crossbow, the owner, the manager and the bellhop. In fact, the only people that he seems to like are those that give him alcohol: a hermit, Jerry, he finds while wandering in the woods, and Fiona, the bartender.

Evil Dead Burn

I'm going to apologize in advance. I... didn't really like it. I think the biggest issue is what Campbell himself pointed out: there's nothing fun or funny about the current crop of these movies. Even the original, which is the most serious, does have some lighthearted moments, but Burn is just mean right from the jump. There aren't even moments where you can laugh at the absurdity, which was a staple of the original series.

Friday the 13th: No Man's Land

Since we haven't had any Friday the 13th movies in far too long, I've reviewed a Jason fan film, or in last year's case, the extended commercial for Angry Orchard featuring Jason, for several years in a row. Mr. Voorhees is my favorite movie baddie, and these fan films have been sort of scratching that itch since Sean Cunningham's greed shut down the video game and any possible sequels. Well, greed and Gun Media's laziness, using the lawsuit as an excuse to cut bait.

Backrooms

I'm an older millennial and, like every aging person, all the new stuff is weird to me. I will give Gen Z some credit; I enjoy the absurdity of its pop culture. Unlike most people my age, I was tickled by 6-7 and some of the other goofiness that generation has created. I think part of the reason their sense of humor is so out there is that we're living in absolutely ridiculous times, and for many, the most important years of their lives were spent stuck at home behind a compu

Blade

I remember watching this movie at the Secor theater when I was a young Mr. Pat, and I loved it. Shortly after it came out, my friend Kyle and I were crossing guards at one of the intersections near the school. We both had long, orange flagpoles where the flags had been ripped off long ago and never replaced. Anyways, while on opposite sides of the street, he and I kept doing the scene where, Blade does some fancy swordwork after wiping out the baddies in the temple.

Something Wicked This Way Comes

had read this book earlier this year, but if I'm being honest with you, I don't remember much of it outside of the carnival setting, some of the cooler bad guy names, and the father of one of the main characters. He wasn't your normal hero; in fact, put him in a lineup, and he's probably the last person you would expect, or want, to be the hero. He's a much older gentleman with a child around 10. His son resents him a bit because he's at that age where he's super active, but

In a Violent Nature

I appreciate when horror movies take big swings. We kicked off the month with a movie told from the perspective of a dog, which I really, really enjoyed. Then there was this movie that's been on my radar for some time. The internet raved about it, and I was very intrigued because it's told from the perspective of an undead killer. When you watch a Friday the 13th or a Halloween movie, the humans are just kind of there; the real star of the show is the mute monster that's stal

Insidious: The Red Door (2023)

This is a weird series for me. When it first came out, everyone told me how scary it was. When I finally got a chance to watch it, I had been prepared to jump a lot, but I just didn't. It was a good movie and had some scary moments, but I think I drank too much of the Kool-Aid.

Send Help

When there's a movie that gets a lot of buzz, I do my best to avoid it completely until I get a chance to see it. That means I don't read any synopses, watch any trailers and try to avoid any conversations about it. In this case, I wish I hadn't gone in fresh. I'll get into that later, but first, let's talk about the movie.

Bring Her Back

So, 17-year-old Andy and his nearly blind sister find their father dead in the shower. He had been battling cancer for an undisclosed amount of time, so his death wasn't totally unexpected. Needless to say, it seems to really affect Andy, who can't bring himself to help their father as he's lying on the floor, ultimately ending in his death.

Scream 7

I get up at midnight to head to work, and I try to be as quiet as possible. After I get myself together, I go and check on Lincoln, and while in his room, I heard Kaliana crying. She was sleeping in our bed next to Dear, so I figured she'd try to wake her mother. When I left Lincoln's room, the crying was much closer, and I could see the outline of her little body in the dark. When I got close to her, she raised her arms for me to pick her up and then immediately pointed to o

Paranorman

Let me get this out of the way right from the jump: I love everything about this movie. I adore the animation, the cast is great, the story is wonderful, the baddies are interesting and nuanced, and the major antagonist can go from legitimately scary and looking awesome one second to heartbreakingly sympathetic the next. It has humor, it has heart and it's a love letter to 80s adventure horror.

The Pope's Exorcist

I had been familiar with the story of Father Gabriele Amorth and was curious about his books, but never got around to reading them. Summed up, he was the official exorcist of the Vatican for many years. Basically, if there was something that needed checking out, Father Gabriele would go in, scope out the situation, and decide if an exorcism was needed.

Alien: Romulus

I like the Alien series and will see every movie they put out there. I think Alien is great, Aliens is even better, but they get progressively worse as they go along. I thought Prometheus was trash, but my goodness, Covenant was so much worse; like, it was aggressively bad. As for Romulus...

Werewolf by Night

As for the movie, it's Halloween night, and a famous and very rich monster hunter, Ulysses Bloodstone, has passed away. At his funeral, several decorated monster hunters, the man's widow, Verussa and his estranged daughter, Elsa, no, not that one- all show up for one reason or another. Verussa tells them they will be hunting a monster roaming their grounds, with the famed Bloodstone in its hide, and the one that defeats it gets to keep the stone. It's every hunter for themsel

Longlegs

Let me get one thing out of the way first because if I don't, I'll probably end up sprinkling some version of this fact throughout this review. Nicolas Cage is awesome and is one of the best actors alive. He plays the titular Longlegs, and he's one of the most unsettling characters I can remember seeing in a horror movie. Of course, he looks creepy as Hell, like whoever put together this character's look did a phenomenal job. And you know, because it's Cage, he's going to...

Return to Silent Hill

I've never been more disappointed in a movie. You have to understand, the Silent Hill video game series is my favorite of all time. The first one scared me more than any other I've ever played, and the second one is my favorite game of all time. Before we get into the meat and potatoes of the review, a little history. The first movie came out in 2006. I can tell you the exact moment I learned about the movie.

The Call

This is an example of a really cool premise that doesn't have the legs for an entire race. A good example of that is the book Cabin at the End of the World. That had an awesome premise, but it kind of falls apart at the end because there's only so much you can do to keep the plot moving to where the writer wants it to end up. Take away about 75 pages, and it would have hit much harder.

Freaky

I'm a big fan of when actors stretch their wings and try something different. There are so many actors and actresses who got their big break thanks to horror movies, but then pretty much stay away from it. You've got Jennifer Aniston, Hayden Christensen, William Shatner, Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney (although he did come back for From Dusk Till Dawn), Brad Pitt, Paul Rudd, Renée Zellweger and many more.If you want to stretch your wings and show you have range, horror is

Good Boy

Two years ago, I reviewed the werewolf movie, Bad Moon. It was based on a book called Thor, which was told entirely from the dog's perspective. I made mention of that in the review, and here's what I said... "I know you can't do a movie through the eyes of the dog, but I find that premise a lot more interesting than the straightforward story we ended up with." I always admit when I'm wrong, so let me say this: I was dead wrong! And Good Boy is all the proof I need.

About us

Mr. Pat is the heart, soul, and voice of the reviews. A lifelong horror fan, he has written one every day of October since 2010, never missing a season. His style blends humor, sinister wit, and the dry sarcasm of “Earth’s Greatest City” — Toledo, Ohio. Every review is judged on the infamous “Dr. Chainsaws” scale, ranked from 1 to 10. For Mr. Pat, this tradition is not work but devotion, a yearly act of love and a tribute to everyday fans who find joy in a good scare. His words echo long after the credits roll, like the whine of a chainsaw in the dark.

Ravenhurst is the caretaker. Texan with a twang in his voice, a rugged streak, and a taste for classic monsters, he keeps the gears of the site turning. When Mr. Pat finishes a review, Ravenhurst edits and adds the photos and GIFs, and posts it for the world to enjoy. He also sets the stage on Instagram and X. With a steady hand and an eye for detail, he ensures the reels keep spinning and the stories reach their audience, always working from the shadows of the graveyard.

Together, they are two caretakers of horror, keeping October alive one movie scream at a time.
